Tips for self-care
Things have been tough for everyone over the last year and everybody has been affected differently, so we need to make sure to take time for ourselves and to be forgiving when we need a break.
Going for a walk is one of my favourite ways to relax! I find that the best time of day to go is around 6 o’clock because it is not super busy and the sky is so pretty especially during the spring/fall months! I recommend putting on some calming music and comfy clothes! Usually, I walk until I find a nice place to sit that is peaceful and quiet so that I can just be in silence with my music, or you can find a busier spot and enjoy some people watching. Take this time to reflect on the day but try your best to avoid any negative thoughts; after all, this is your brain break! I also really love this form of relaxation because it gets my blood flowing and is a nice way to get out of my house and get some fresh air. I am a firm believer that everyone should get out and enjoy fresh air at some point every day!
Yoga is also something that I have found to be super relaxing. Some of my friends tend to do a video at night before bed which can be super calming if that’s what you’re looking for. I also have found that doing a yoga video in the morning starts my day on the right foot with a little bit of physical activity and makes it easier for me to focus throughout the day!
Another self-care tip I find really helpful, especially for anyone needing a little more social interaction is spending a night with my roommates. In between our busy schedules we always make sure we have time for one another at the end of the week to debrief. It can be super easy to get caught up doing work all day especially with all the restrictions due to COVID19; making it feel like all the days blend together. Laughing and relaxing with your friends is always time well spent and is guaranteed to brighten your day. Here is a list of some girl’s night activities that can be a relaxing end to a busy week:
- Paint night
This could be putting on a Bob Ross video or painting a picture of your favourite place. One of my favourite activities that we’ve done was paint funny portraits of one another with a big reveal at the end!
- Watch the bachelor/bachelorette
- Play a board game or card game (our favourite is clue!)
- Create a new drink
- Play just dance
Whatever method of self-care or relaxation you find works best for you, make sure to give yourself time for it every day. As important as school and work are, your mental health needs to come before everything else! Find what works for you and it makes it so much easier to stick to it. Don’t feel guilty for taking a break because you are working so hard, and you deserve it!
